Overlockers seem a little scary, but I promise they’re not!

An overlocker is such a useful machine. They will quickly give your dressmaking projects a professional finish, but they can also be used to make whole garments with stretch fabric in no time at all.

Overlockers work with multiple spools of thread, two needles, and a cutting blade; they can be noisy little machines too, but don’t fear! From getting to grips with threading up, (the trickiest part – in my opinion!) to understanding the tension dials and changing the settings to finishing seams and sewing garments together, we will help you to fall in love with this amazing little machine!

In this one class An Introduction to Overlockers, we will teach you how to thread your machine and even let you in on our secret method for changing thread colours quickly! We will help you to understand overlocker maintenance and what to do if your tension is not quite right. After that, you will be ready to take on your first ever garment completely constructed on the overlocker – The Hemlock Tee by Grainline Studios. This t-shirt is a relaxed fit with dropped shoulders and a flattering round neck. The t-shirt comes in three different length options, from tunic to cropped and has multiple sleeve lengths. The sizing on this pattern is inclusive – from size 0 to 30.

What's included:
We will provide the overlockers for this class, so there is no need to bring your own. We will also provide the thread and any other notions you need. We will keep you going with lots of tea, coffee and biscuits, and of course, our expert tuition and notes to take home are also included.

What do I need to bring?
There is a little bit of homework for this one!

You will need to download the Hemlock T-shirt from Grainline Studios. This pattern is available here.

Before coming to the class, you need to have cut your paper pattern to your required size and cut your fabric, ready to sew.

After booking, we will send you a confirmation which will explain what fabric you need to make your t-shirt. We will also send you a link to our YouTube channel with clips explaining exactly where to download the required pattern and what to do with it after you have printed it.

This class is for you if:
This class is for you if you have ever wondered if an overlocker is right for you?

Perhaps you have an overlocker stuck in its box that you have never used or wonder if you should invest in one. This class would also suit anyone who has used an overlocker before, but perhaps you have run into problems and need some guidance or are looking to start using your overlocker for a little more than just finishing seams.

This class is not for you if:

If you are a complete beginner at sewing, this class is not for you. It's no problem if you have never used an overlocker before, but you will need to already be familiar with using a sewing machine, seam allowances and simple dressmaking patterns. If you are new to sewing, look at our Beginners Complete Sewing Course.
